Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
