Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a flight risk
The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, BrasĂlia.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
