The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback
At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
