Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
