Mikel Arteta Applauds a More Dependable Team and Acknowledges Havertz Setback.
Arsenal's manager remains confident that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.
Extended Absence for German Star
Havertz has been out since August due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to return at the start of this month, the manager stated the player faced a hurdle when advancing his recovery and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This news creates a tactical puzzle for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is in contention post-recovery.
Defensive Concerns Linger
Additional concerns affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the backline for the league leaders.
The manager is convinced the substantial investment on reinforcements during the summer has placed the club in a much stronger position to navigate such absences.
Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge
Questioned if more options was aiding their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”
Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star
Speaking about the complication previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”
He shared his eagerness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his character, his attitude. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
“His fitness history is phenomenal, he's rarely been injured, and I can’t wait to see him return around the team and playing because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
