Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
