Seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
