Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
