Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Dies

A woman who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.

The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 9 PM GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.

The suspect, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.

Originally charged with attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.

Law Enforcement Actions

The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.

Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.

Attack Site Details

The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.

Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.

Witness Accounts

Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period around 10 PM on Friday.

She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.

"A lot of co-workers take public transport, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."

Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.

"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.

"She lacks transportation and works at major concert locations... considering a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
